[Fixed] Computer restarts when usb device is connected

Thread Starter
I have a computer that I built for my parents nothing special these are the specifications.

  • Motherboard : GA-K8nf-9
  • Cpu : AMD Athlon 64 32+ @2Ghz
  • Ram : 1,5Gb DDR
  • Hdd : 160Gb
  • OS : Windows 7 Service Pack 1

The problem :
  • Some kind of a USB problem
  • When I press start button --> shutdown the computer restarts (The keyboard and mouse are plugged on external USB card)
  • If I disconnect the mouse and the keyboard from the external USB card then the computer shuts down But when I start the computer back later on the computer gets stuck on BIOS screen.
  • When it get stuck on the BIOS screen I need to force shutdown and switch the mouse and keyboard to external USB card and everything works Until I need to shut down the computer again.

Hope some one has an idea on what I could do :/

I had an issue with my gigabyte motherboard's short circuit protection rebooting my machine , it was very sensitive, and plugging anything into the front ports on the machine risked a reboot

why an external card for the keyboard & mouse?

the stuck in bios also happened sometimes, a quick reset switch got the machine to boot.

Not sure if there is an easy fix for the shorting issue

I need to use the external card "D-Link DUB-A2" (PCI slot) cause if I connect the mouse and keyboard or any usb device to the motherboard it will the not boot to windows :/

Edit :

The case does not have a restart button. I do not use the front USB cause they are broken. Only on the I/O side of motherboard.

ok, sounds like it might be more of a major issue.
the system itself is quite old, so troubleshooting may be more than it's worth,

Power supply to the mainboard might be a starter though, also a different keyboard and mouse, any chance the cables are damages or even the usb plugs.

Also check the sockets on the mainboard for damage, they could also cause a short.

I have plenty of time and this is fun for me abit hehe thumb.gif the power supply is good i tested it and every number is correct and the unit is functioning well.

The motherboard is also good. Tried other mouses and keyboards still the same. humm

Going to try to unplug the front USB and see if that makes any change.

well make sure the system is clean inside and out, remount the motherboard, check for shorts.
and try a different power supply, if it is very old there is a possibility that it is on it's way out.

See if you can use a diff usb port..Hook up a front connector if you have to.
Rebooting means the port is probably not soldered on well,or the traces going to it are weak.
