YouTube now has a '1440p' option for video quality - QHD slowly becoming the new standard?

Proof

I for one am really excited about this. YouTube videos looked terrible at 1080p full screen on my PB278Q. It's exactly like watching 720p full screen on a 27" 1080p monitor. 1440p problems..

But anyways, I find it interesting that Google thinks 1440p monitors are common enough now that it warrants writing in an actual quality setting into their players. It seems that 1440p is finally starting to become a new standard resolution, and 4K is very, very slowly starting to become what 1440p was a few years ago.

With the prices of those Korean import 1440p monitors dropping to the low $300's, people are having more options as to what they can buy, because that's definitely approaching the cost of premium 1080p monitors. And there's really no reason to be playing on 1080p in my opinion if you've spent the cash for a 7970, GTX 680/770, or multi-GPU setups of mid-range cards.

You may not be able to max things at 60fps with the single-card setups, but at slightly reduced settings you will still get a better picture than on 1080p, along with the sheer increase in practicality that having more resolution (and therefore more screen space) gives you. With the multi-mid-range-GPU setups you can definitely play on max.

What do you guys think? I'm way too excited about this, and not just because certain YouTube videos won't look like crap on my monitor now tongue.gif

Well, with 1440p monitors like the ASUS PB278Q and the Dell U2713HM becoming more mainstream and other Korean models like the QNIX QX2710 Evolution II becoming more affordable. I'd imagine that 1440p will become a standard in the next couple years.

Yea I've been seeing this. I like how you linked one of levelcapgaming videos. Considering he only records on a 1080p monitor how in the hell is their a 1440p HD option? You can't just magically make data out of nothing. I think this is Google (youtube) trying to pass off this 1440p HD option as just a 1080p HD with less compression. Therefore making it look better but it's not actually a higher resolution than the uploaded source.

He records 1080p but renders his videos at 2048x1152. Before 1440p was an option you could do that to get videos to load at 'Original' bitrate, which is nice for people who have that connection speed.

I suspect that "Original" now means "higher than 1440p" instead of "higher than 1080p" like it did before. And then 1440p is just "between 1441p and 1080p" lol

It's a bit odd though, because there's a huge quality difference between the 1080p setting and LevelCap's 1152p upload. Almost like an actual 1440p recording of BF4. Looks fine on my screen at least.

I downloaded his video in 1080p and "1440p" then threw them in a program called mediainfo and here are the differences:

So yea I just wanted to verify what the resolution size and what the bitrate difference is. And as you can tell at 1440p it's nearly twice as much at 9110 Kbps or 10 Mbps which is why my puny little 6Mbps download can't handle it. Unless you buffered it about half way or more. That's not considering all the other variables that come into play like other services / programs using bandwidth other devices on your network. Way too many variables to list. Which is why it's pathetic the US average download is 5.5Mbps

Any of you know the MAX audio birtate @ 1440p? Is it still 192kbps like last year, being the same audio quality as 1080p?

If I uploaded FLAC audio, would there be a higher quality difference?

I find youtube is terrible for music listening. 192kbps vs 1064kbps is atrocious. mad.gif

I'm not sure about the value of the max bitrate, but i do know that the max audio playback quality occurs at 720p. There is no change in audio quality past that.

As for uploading, I am not sure how using different formats affects playback. For what it's worth, YouTube audio playback is .m4a
