CPU selection for Whitebox VM servers - Page 3

Plex uses FFmpeg for transcoding and they recommend a Core2 Duo 2.4Ghz if you're going to need to transcode one 1080p file. For 2 simultaneously transcodes they say double the speed, for 3 tripe it, etc. etc. This is the benchmark link they provide in their FAQ for reference point.

The only question is how do you calculate 3-4 times the speed of a Core2 Duo 2.4Ghz? Would a Xeon E3 be somewhere in that range?

The speed can also vary a lot depending on what resolution/codec you transcode it to. With high(the veryslow preset) x264 settings, it takes me 5 times longer to transcode a 1080p file to 1080p than to 480p.

The calculation is quite simple if you use the site you linked, each CPU has a score so you just need to check if the score for the E3 you want is 3-4 times higher than a core2 Duo.

Gotcha. I also have to take into account that I won't be able to use all 4 cores since I'll be running my media server as a VM and need to at least leave one core for managing my VM's, etc.

If I don't have a need for ECC support, is there any advantage to using a Xeon over say a 3770 for a VM server?

I just bought an E3 1230V2, basically = to 3770 but it cost me $225 instead of $345, enough reason there imo tongue.gif

You have to use a separate graphic card with the 1230v2 though since it doesn't have an IGP.

Nothing a $20 card wont fix for install, then likely to run headless anyway. I have a couple 210's around for spares just in case I blow something up thumb.gif
