Crowd Wisdom vs. Google's Genius

Thread Starter
Quote:
Can the wisdom of crowds trump the genius of Google? The founder of Web encyclopedia Wikipedia believes it not only can, but it will. Jimmy Wales, the man behind Wikipedia, which ranks among the top 15 online destinations worldwide, plans to launch a new search engine in the first three months of 2007. He believes the project, which is called Wikiasari, could someday overtake Google (GOOG) as the leader of Web search.

It would take years for them to even make a dent in Google's market share.

I love Wikipedia and I'm there several times a a week for assorted research, but I'm not going to drop my Gmail accounts, hosted videos, and custom home page for Wikipedia just yet, and I think many others would agree with me.

for a search engine...no thanks. Google has made WAY too good of a name for itself in the last 5 + years.

If it gets as popular as wikipedia it will definitely be better than google. Results would actually have a meaningful rank

Lots of comanies make good names for themselves. So? No one's on top forever.

I'll be interested in what Wikipedia accomplishes. Based on what little was said in the article, the first thing that comes to mind is web optimization. I would think that a search engine based on "human intelligence" to fine tune the search capabilities would be open to optimization hacks. It will be interesting to see how they deal with that.

Google is far from perfect, and Wikipedia is a respected name. With the right funding, implentation, and minds at work, they might come up with something really useful. Looks like it'll take a long time, though.

You must admit, the name sucks and they need something short you can type quickly, and that you can say easily.

"Just google it" is something that isn't going to be easily removed from our vocabularies.
