How can I find small app development companies / studios / teams?

Hey all,

I'm currently starting my own company with a few other people and we've created software for collaborative application development. We've got a very functional product which is ready for market and we're at the point where we're starting to look for customers.

It's very easy to google search "App Development Studios [area / region]" and get information on the largest app dev studios in a given area, but we're trying to target smaller teams (1-10 people) and try to court them as pilot users.

How do you all think we can best identify and reach out to these type of teams? I'm not sure if there's some magical keyword I'm not googling or if there's a strategy I'm not using, but I'm trying to find the most effective way to find these people.

Any thoughts?

The only way to do this is by area and naturally the websites of larger developers will be ranked higher (minus some amazing SEO by a smaller company).

Pick a moderately sized city (eg kalamazoo). Do a search for developers in that city. Start browsing the hits. The big companies will stand out immediately. It's just a matter of following wherever the Great Google leads. I have the hypothesis (based on my observations) that in general, companies with enough money for office an HR people will have a lot more written on their site while smaller companies are typically busier and feel less need/corporate pressure (even though this is disastrous to their future growth) It might be possible to filter the top X hits based on the amount of text per page. Well, now that I've almost talked myself into trying...

That said, I wouldn't market to those guys (small companies). Most are borderline freelance and due to freelance rates, aren't generally in the market. If your product is as solid as you believe, just start talking to the large companies. Once you get the first contract or two, the others will immediately become easier to sell.
