Welp just watched TTL's review, what a massive disappointment from AMD.
Ill sum it up:
Trades blows with the 780 (as expected)
Runs extremely hot (95c in heaven benchmark)
Much louder than the reference 780/titan cooler. (even tho amd ramped down fan speeds, somehow its still louder)
Uses about 80w more power at load than a 780
It does have one saving grace, price is around 570 bucks from what ive seen.
Tom actually went as far as saying he would not recommend the reference model unless you planned on watercooling it, something he has never said about any video card (including the infamous 480). Speaking of the 480, the 290x is now in contention as the hottest running and most power hungry single GPU in the history of video cards.
On top of all of that, it is rumored that december is the earliest we will start seeing board partner coolers, WHY!. I was rooting for AMD here but i gotta say i am massively disapponted, the majority of this negative criticism could have been AVOIDED COMPLETELY with a better reference cooler.
I still havent seen any proper overclocking benchmarks so i cant comment there, but i assume its because it is thermal limited (anand, toms, TTL none of them did a page on overclocking results).
For me these reviews tell me that if you buy a reference 290x throw away the cooler and put a waterblock on it. For the rest of the world basically you need to wait for aftermarket cooling.
