So my new Sony 65X9004A 4K TV arrived today. Man is it huge and heavy. But most of all sexy!
I purchased it for the purely to be used as a PC Monitor for games. I understand that this model TV only has HDMI 1.4 at the moment and although it will get upgraded to HDMI 2.0 soon via an online Firmware update their is no current GPU that has HDMI 2.0. Maybe I can get a DP1.2 to HDMI adapter and it will work? But still if all else fails I will just have to wait for a GPU with HDMI 2.0 and enjoy the high res on slower games for now.
So I unboxed and some how managed to fit this beast into my 10 foot by 11 foot office. It absolutely dominates my desk! I plugged in my hdmi cable into my top GTX Titan and into the tv. I turn on my tv and ran through the general setup (5 mins) and then selected the hdmi source for my computer. My god I was greeted to a beautiful splendid picture and basically needed to change my pants. I thought at this point I need to take some photos but I didnt like the desktop background. So I right clicked on the desktop and I accidentally click on screen resolution where I was greeted with the shock of my life!!!!!!!!! The TV was only running at 1080p!!!!! Yes 1080p!!!! This TV is a machine and can upscale 1080p to near 4k quality. I would say its half way. I switched to 3840 x 2160 and all the desktop icons shrunk and shot across the screen up into the top left corner. everything seams instantly so small and it even annoyed me but now 1 hour later Im loving it. All the extra real estate is awesome! I had to try a game after all that. I went to the TV settings and flicked it to Game Mode and opened up the one game I think may make this TV really shine - ARMA 3. OMG!!! every setting was set ultra and bang the game loaded up and the texture and environment looks real! I quickly hit enter to see 3rd person and it looks like a guy is standing in front of you and your looking through a window. And then a doubt crept into my mind what if its laggy and looks bad when turning and moving because of motion blur. Well I took my little soldier on a run and spin and it looks fantastic and this is only 30hz. Imagine when HDMI 2.0 is sorted and its running at 60hz twice as good!!!!!! The lag was not perceivable at all and felt good. i played for 10 minutes and thought lets give a twitch FPS game like COD a go. Well i don't know what happened but it was laggy. the motion blur was fine bearable but the textures and game looked shocking. The game gave no justice to the 4k TV. I then moved onto NBA 2k13. the game looks awesome but motion blur is visable but you get used to it. It feels like playing 2k13 on the PlayStation but far superior graphics.
Basically once HDMI 2.0 GPU's come out this TV will really come alive for me. I'm over the FPS on PC because I must admit there are some good lads that play. I haven't tried any EA games because Im having trouble logging in. I really want to try FIFA, Simcity and BF3. Maybe BF3 will be ok on the more open maps and try not to get involved in close combat (maybe camping LOL).
Any questions feel free to ask and I will try and respond or try stuff out for you.
