Windows XP + External RAID1 enclosure

Thread Starter
Hello there.
My HTPC uses Windows XP.
I wanted to connect my external RAID 1 enclosure (consisting of two 2TB Greens) to my HTPC.

The drive does not show up in My Computer. It shows up in Disk Management, but I cannot do anything with it, only select properties. I am unable to assign a drive letter.

All other drives work fine on the HTPC and the RAID 1 box of course works on other computers (until now, I've only used it on Windows 7 machines, however).

Is there any reason why an external RAID 1 drive should not work in Windows XP?

Yes,

Did you format it on a windows 7 PC? If so and you assigned it a GPT partion it won't work.

Have you used this RAID array before on any machine and is there currently data on it?

How are you connecting your RAID1 enclosure to your xp machine?

Have you got it as a single 2TB partition?

Formatted on a Win7 machine, yes. And it is GPT.

Yes, has few hundred GB of data on it.

Tried both USB 3 and USB 2

2TB drives mirrored, single partition.

So I guess I won't be able to use it on Win XP machines?
Not too much of an issue, just wanted to back up all my media before running EaseUS on the disk.

No problem, it's what we're here for biggrin.gif

However you can convert it to an MBR disk

http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windowsserver/en-US/53dee40a-49fd-43f2-a190-91129439cc92/how-do-i-change-a-gpt-volume-to-an-mbr-volume?forum=winserverfiles

At a command prompt, type: diskpart, and then press ENTER.
At the diskpart prompt, type: list disk, and then press ENTER.
Record the disk number of the disk that you want to convert to an MBR disk.
At the diskpart prompt, type: select disk n, and then press ENTER.
At the diskpart prompt, type: convert mbr, and then press ENTER.
