Xeon E3-1270 v2 VS Xeon E3-1230 v3

Thread Starter
So I currently have a "E3-1270 v2" in one of my servers, and I am considering moving to a E3-1230 v3 (This is a rental situation, to save money).

Quote:
Model (Haswell/Ivy) (CPUbenchmark.net score)
E3-1230 v3 (Haswell) (9574)
E3-1270 v2 (Ivy Bridge) (9730)
E3-1270 v3 (Haswell) (10308)

Intel page comparing the three.

Could anyone comment on how much slower the E3-1230 v3 would be? From a quick google it seems like more of a sidegrade/minor downgrade - would I be correct?

The difference in CPUbenchmark.net scores seems to be less than it is from a 3770K (9581) to a 4770K (10122) for example.

(The E3-1270 v3 is out of budget but I just included that for completeness.)

well for a server, id say the E3-1230V3 would be the best cost effective solution. What kind of server is it?

Fairly typical PHP + SQL webserver and a couple of Minecraft instances chewing up most of the CPU.

If the performance is as similar as the benchmarks make out then I won't have a problem smile.gif Hopefully someone can clarify that.

These "Xeons" aren't really servers, they're rebranded clients. You should see similar, or lower performance. If you want a real server system you'd want one which starts witha 2*** sku.

Um thanks for you opinion. Now my fake server will cry during idle periods.

While his wording could be better lol i agree that they are just rebranded desktop parts. Are you using a server board? Do you need ECC? If no to those you could go with a consumer board and ram to save cost while getting the Xeon 1240v3.

Its a rented dedicated server using ECC memory + a supermicro motherboard along with their awesome IPMI.

Its not a huge saving to drop down to desktop hardware in the rental market.

Oh, didnt notice that part ;P

Shouldnt really matter, performance is pretty close, id go with the one that saves you money because its not much of a performance difference.
