[TR] Seagate 2 TB SSHD Hybrid Drive Review.

Otherwise known as solid-state hybrid drives, SSHDs combine mechanical platters with flash-based cache memory.
When the latest batch of notebook-bound SSHDs was introduced, Seagate revealed that a desktop version would soon join the family. This simply named Desktop SSHD would discard the 2.5" form factor of previous hybrids in favor of a larger 3.5" body packed with 2TB of 7,200-RPM mechanical storage.
Let's see what the world's first hybrid desktop drive can do.

I'm not sure if I should be shocked at the results or pleasantly surprised. thinking.gif

I wish a HDD manufacturer would go ahead and put a decent amount of NAND on one of these drives. 8gb is a little shy of being able to completely cache most modern games.

Surprisingly, the Desktop SSHD scores poorly in HD Tune's burst speed tests. The Barracuda 3TB is well over 100MB/s faster.

I didm´t realize the Barracudas were that quick.

I'm somewhat unimpressed by the performance. A velociraptor or barracuda seem like a better buy to me.

3.5", damn. Been looking for a 2.5" 2TB Hybrid to pop in my PS4.

I rather have them cache most of the OS. smile.gif

Besides, you wouldn't want to cache a whole game... only the small random files.

Pairing separate solid-state and mechanical drives is more expensive than getting an SSHD, but not by as much as you might expect. Seagate's Barracuda 2TB hard drive is priced at $100 right now, and you can add a 32GB SSD for less than $50 more. You'll want caching software or an SRT-compatible platform to manage that relationship, but the drives ring in at only $10 more than the $140 asking price attached to the Desktop SSHD.

You can get a 2TB 7200RPM HDD for $80 and a 50GB SSD for $45.... cheaper.

Would destroy these SSHD...

I agree, I'd want it to completely cache the OS, plus enough for a decent sized game. So something like 32gb NAND would be much more desirable.

8GB is a little shy to cache Windows entirely. C'mon WD and Toshiba, hurry up with yours!

8gb is lame

they had that on the WD750gb model and it was really fast and all that.. but 8gb... should be 16gb these days ideally for caching your most used game and the OS files n programs 30gb

if they did a fast 2TB 30gb cache model id snap them up, you could always raid that cache with 2 drives or even Jbod giving you 4TB and 64gb would be fast and huge
