Why you should not buy a Corsair CX

Thread Starter
I am getting tired of everyone that thinks the Corsair CX is a good PSU you can use everywhere

Like in gaming and overclocking PC´s

So i am going to make this thread and give you reasons why its not as good as many make it out to be and why you sould not buy it for those type of PC´s

Before i start i just want to say the CX750 is not the same PSU as the CX430/500/600 which is why i dont talk about the CX750 here

Also i have not made or reviewed any of the data in here all of it comes from Techpowerup and google and a few other places

Anyway lets start with Corsair has to say for themselfs

CX Series™ power supply units are an excellent choice for basic system builds and desktop PC computer upgrades. CX Series PSUs are available in a variety of power configurations, and include features that are normally found only on premium power supplies.

Again this part for anyone that cant read very well

excellent choice for basic system

So lets dive into more details

First off its not made by Corsair its made by Channel Well Technology or CWT

The platform is called DSAII

So lets go into build quality with big pictures

CX430M

CX500M

CX600M

Now all i see in there are lots of cheap parts

The main capacitor is a Panasonic but only rated for 85c not 105c like the good first rated capacitors

The rest are cheap CapXon´s which is pretty much the worst you can put into it

Next up is voltage regulation

Now this is not the worst voltage regulation in the world

But its not anywhere near great either its about as average as you can get which makes it mediocre

Next up is ripple

Again this is not the worst in the world but its not great either again just average at best and mediocre at worst

So there you have its an cheap PSU made and meant for non stressfull tasks like your basic office/media/web browsing PC´s

it does not belong in any kind of mid or high end gaming and/or overclocking PC and anyone that thinks and recommends it for those types of PC´s stop it

There you have it

And now i hope to see less of the CX now because its not as good as its claimed to be by some

Well, I think it's time to kill my overclock for a bit... It's a good PSU for the price, but don't expect any heavy lifting? That's what I got out of this anyway.

Doesn't Corsair design a PSU and then contracts the making of it to a OEM? I heard the AX1200i was like this.

But the CX series are designed/made by CWT entirely, correct?

Some models are like that yes

But in this case they just bought the CWT DSAII platform and slapped it into their own box and sell it as a Corsair unit

Good thread thumb.gif Some people unfortunately think that everything Corsair branded is pure gold. IIRC the original CX430 was pretty good value PSU but was later replaced with this cheap low quality platform.

My cousin used CX430M with his low end gaming rig. It was otherwise stable but he had odd amount of hardware failures, especially hard drives. I heard that ripple can slowly degrade and even break components so I took the CX430M out and replaced it with Super Flower Golden Green 450w (excellent value). Ever since the computer has been trouble free. Coincidence? I think not. I wish I had replaced it earlier.
