tablet for school

Thread Starter
so i havent followed tablets since the transformer prime was king. i was hoping to get some advice for a tablet for school, the needs arent anything extreme, they are as follows:

hd video, netflix etc
headphone jack
10 inch screen
NOT APPLE PRODUCT
EBOOKS EASY TO FIND AND NAVIGATE'

okay, so with that said i would like the price to be realistic. this isnt something i am going to be using to play games or anything. maybe some stupid games but nothing major. i am a student so i can usually get a discount through any manufacturer. i have a laptop i use for my homework papers etc. i also have a more then capable gaming computer. the tablet just seems like an easier way to get my books and reading done. aswell as easier then having to pull out my laptop all the time at school.

i dont have an os preference, the gf has the prime and its nice. i didnt care for desktop/laptop windows 8 but for a tablet it seems like it would work well. i love to watch anime, movies, tv shows. i love good music and would like for it to have above average audio. looking to buy by january, BUT if the new top of the line thing is coming out i could be conviced to wait.

thank you,
V

I use a galaxy note 10.1 (2013) as my tablet in school. It allows for annotating pdf's on the fly as well. The screen is only 720p, but the device is speedy and smooth and has a nifty multi-window function so you can have a pdf open and then a note-taking app next to it. It can be found for about 300 now on sale.

The 2014 versions is 2560x1600 and faster but costs 550 base.

Your closest alternatives would be a Nexus 10 (can be found for around 350 but doesn't have expandable memory) or the new transformer infinity 701 (not released yet but 399 base model and 499 with keyboard dock and extra battery built-in). The Infinity has been delayed though so it might not come out till November.

Probably the best 10" android tablet right now is probably the sony xperia which is very thin, light, water resistant, and speedy.

Those are probably your best options.

I'll second this. The surface is the best buy for school use by far, but......

and I'll probably get scolded for this here....

I would recommend the Surface RT to students in my honest opinion. It's cheap, comes with Microsoft office which professors mostly require for document formats, and their are some really nice Windows 8 apps out there. If you're not sure what Surface RT is, it's Windows 8 that runs on an ARM chip(tegra 3). The metro apps work on it, and there is a desktop just like normal Windows 8, but you won't be able to install x86 applications on it. I think the Surface RT will meet all of your requirements listed above. As for Ebooks, I hear Google Play Books has some nice discounts for students, all of which is accessible from the web. Definitely go to the nearest BestBuy and try one out. It's a sharp looking piece of hardware, and prices are sure to fall even more soon.

As for your Anime, Movies, Tv Shows, I've been testing the Windows 8 Plex app on my desktop and if you have your media collection on your desktop, then just setup Plex media server.

If I was still a student on campus, that's exactly what I would do thumb.gif Although now I'm the IT guy that works on campus tongue.gif
