Looking for some input on my CPU upgrade paths.

I'm looking for a short term upgrade with my current set up, or this other board i have available to me. Right now i can play BF4 beta on all high and textures on ultra at 90% utilization. I have a phenom II x4 955. I can get it stable at about 3.8 ghz with the stock cooler.

I have 2 different mother boards available to me.

GIGABYTE GA-890FXA-UD5 AM3 AMD 890FX SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX AMD Motherboard (in my GF's rig, put together with spare parts from a friend)

ASUS M4A79XTD EVO AM3 AMD 790X ATX AMD Motherboard (using now)

Rumor has it the gigabyte is capable of supporting the FX series with a firmware update. I have not tested this or found definitive proof. It is Rev2.

I was thinking for going a phenom II x6. Would this even be worth it for a year or 2?

In about 14 months i plan on upgrading my main board and CPU to the latest and greatest. Until then i don't know if it's worth just a couple hundred to crank games a bit better.

Full specs:

AMD Phenom II X4 955 @ 3.8ghz
M4A79XTD-EVO
16 GB 1600mhz ram
MSI GTX 660 ti
Antec 650w PSU

Looks like your Asus does not support the FX cpus so maybe the 6 core phenom is your best bet on that mobo, the Giga will take an FX 6350 or 6300 125w processor and possibly an 83xx but might be limited on the OC

If the giga supports an FX i would definately like to go that way and avoid OC'ing.

I can OC, i just dont like fidgiting with it.
