I have removed the CPU and checked for bent pins, then carefully re-seated it, still just blank monitor in standby, with no signs of activity bar spinning fans and blue LEDS all over the case. I've attached photos for some reason...
Can anyone think of an inventive way I can get some form of error report for this board/cpu/gpu? Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)

Is you friend running with DDR3 memory?
If so ask to bought a stick to test it if it is not Ballistix ram. AsRock is picky about memory.

Maybe test just bare essentials outside the casing to rule out any short from the casing mounts.

Try your GPU in the first PCI-E slot, nearest the CPU.

It's all currently coming back out of the case, but I did check thoroughly for all the correct mountings and nothing else before I placed the Mobo (I spent all my spare cash and more on this, I wasn't exactly rushing when I put it together! smile.gif ) and I'm going to give it another test. unfortunately my housemate is also running an old rig like mine was, so these two ballistix are the only two DDR3 sticks in the house (and probably in the whole village too!)

Try the ram in slot 2 & 4. AsRock likes ram in those slot better than 1 & 3.

IT LIVES!!!

I removed EVERYTHING, cleaned everything, then took the motherboard out of the case. One loose case screw was wedged between the motherboard and the backplate. Thanks for your help guys, I knew we'd get there eventually, this community is too hardy to let a loose case screw and an underqualified idiot beat it biggrin.gif +rep to all who helped, you've been wonderful wubsmiley.gif
