Tips for getting the most out of my F@H rigs.

Thread Starter
Hoping someone can give me some tips to optimize my rigs for F@H. I have been folding a long time, but the past year or so I have been a "set it and forget it" folder. Both of my rigs fold 24/7 (although one has been giving me fits the last few months).

Rig 1
4770k@4ghz
16Gb 1600mhz
650ti Boost

Set to maximum and folding cpu/gpu
pdd this am- 36k

Rig 2
Xeon 1230v2
16GB 1600mhz

Set to maximum cpu only
ppd this am- 18k

Ppd have varied quite a bit, but these scores look to be average for my rigs. I have looked at some stats although I wish there was a way for me to get a lot more details as then I could find out more on what I could tweak.

Right now I have over 11k units and 11m points. I am happy with that, but I was hoping I could squeeze more out of what I have. As for upgrades, I am strapped, so for now its settings tweaking only.

I think maybe its time I joined a team too. If I do, will my points transfer or am I starting all over?

Thanks in advance!

Do you have the client-type = beta flag on your 650 Ti? It should be doing around 40k PPD alone. As for the 4770k, you can try folding with it under Ubuntu in a virtual machine to net more points, it should do around 30k PPD or a bit more under the right environment. You could always OC it a little more as well. thumb.gif

Not quite sure how to optimize the Xeon rig, I haven't ever used one of them so we'll have to wait for an expert to chime in. smile.gif

Finally, if you join a team your points won't transfer over, so if you join team 37726 you won't have the 11Million points you had before.

Thanks for the reply. "Do you have the client-type = beta flag on your 650 Ti? It should be doing around 40k PPD alone." Couldn't tell ya, lol. My guess is no as I haven't tweaked F@H at all on that rig. Ubuntu is an interesting option. I haven't used it in years. If the performance is worth it, I suppose I could just dual boot. The 4770k is in an FT03 Mini and for stability sake, I am gonna stay at 4ghz. I have had it to 4.2 with no issues though. Bummer on the points transfer, but I may just have to join anyway smile.gif.

If you could tell me a bit more about tweaking the gpu setting like you said, that would be awesome.

Well if you open the "FAHControl" program and then click "Configure" in the top buttons, then click Slots, then double click your GPU slot. Near the bottom it should show a spot to add extra flags, and add the flag there.

If you apply the client-type=beta flag to get those nice Core 17 work units, you will also need to to reduce the number of threads that the CPU is folding on. This is because the current Nvidia OpenCL implementation requires 1 CPU thread per GPU folding client. If you are currently folding on all 8 threads of your 4770K, the CPU folding client will be slowed down considerably because it will be fighting with the GPU client for that CPU thread.

To fix this, reduce the CPU folding threads from 8 to 6 (using 7 threads has been known to cause problems with some work units). Click on Configure -> Slots tab -> double-click on CPU slot. Change the number of CPU threads to 6 (it is set to -1 by default).

EDIT: Also, don't use the latest Nvidia beta driver. It is causing performance for non-780 Kepler GPU's to drop significantly. Stick with WHQL drivers for now.

My 4770k @ 4.3ghz is only pulling 10-12k PPD under W7 64bit... I'm going to try Ubuntu in a VM to see if that bumps it up a little.

But don't let my CPU discourage you... I didn't even get a moderate batch on mine... Some people are getting 20k PPD with theirs on W7.

I have since joined OCN team Explosm (only with my 4770k)! I have also worked on using Ubuntu under VM in Windows. The 4770k is listing 30k ppd in F@H control, but until I start to get bonus points, it's only counting around 4k ppd (?). As for my Xeon rig, turns out it had a bad memory stick. Now that it is up and running correctly, its getting 15k ppd under Windows.

Thanks for the replies. As I dig deeper in VM/Ubuntu, hopefully production will increase.
