LN316 stainless steel for waterblocks ?

Hi,

I have found a couple 100 kg of bars of explosion welded stainless steel - copper at work , they are normally used to make chamber for an electron synchrotron , but these are didn't meet requirement and will be discarded.
This steel is used to make a water cooling circuit on the side of chamber , It good enough for ultra high vacuum .
the bare are 50 mm wide and made with about 30 mm of ln 316 steel welded to 15 mm of copper.
the copper would be the block plate , while i would saw the steel in half and machine the block and a top.

Do you know of any problems that may occur with stainless steel and other metals in a loop ?
i've noticed not many components are maid in stainless steel , aldo it could be because this grade of steel is really hard to find in small quantitiy and really expensive , specially when it explosion welded to cooper biggrin.gif
i m asking that because i m pretty sure i could get enough of that to make some custom blocks for all my components , plus i have the milling machine at work too ,....

what do you think about this idea , what kind of problem could occur ?

a lot of impingement plates for cpus are made with stainless steel, for example my heatkiller cpu block as well as supreme. So many including myself have used stainless steel with copper for years without issue. And you especially wont have issues with quality 316 stainless.

We use 340 alloy, 316 should work well in stainless steel - copper loop as well without any corrosion issues. But, as always, it's wise to use corrosion inhibitor additives such as propylene glycol in any loop.

I'm not sure how thermally conductive stainless is, so you might want to consider machining the stainless off the bottom half completely if you can.

You shouldn't have any issues with reactivity. Stainless steel is used in most applications specifically because it has a very low chance of reacting with other substances, be it fluids or metals.

Where you'll have problems is with heat transfer. That grade of SS has a thermal conductivity of 16.3 W/m*K where copper has 400 W/m*K. That's a 24.5 fold difference in efficiency. So even if you use the copper that's been welded as the means to transfer heat from the CPU and the SS as the channels for the cooling liquid, you'd be losing a large amount of heat transfer capability simply through loss of contact surface area of the copper with the cooling liquid.

What would work better would be to machine the copper, and put channels into that for the coolant, and just use the SS as a top for the block, but that would require separating the weld.

TL;DR don't bother.

ok thanks for your answers , i will see tomorrow if i can get some smile.gif but since they have been laying there for age , pretty sure it will be ok.

yeah it s an amazing process , on some bars you can see the initiation point of the explosion the plate are not perfectly together. i love to see it in slow motion ,
you can see the plate that seems to split appart at the side and then they slam together.

but the performance could be really good , if i can find the tools to make an appropriate design, it s made to cool down the chamber of the world most powerfull electron synchrotron, so i guess it can tame my cpu biggrin.gif
