You can only provide so much backwards compatibility until it becomes a nuisance, and ultimately, impacts your current performance.
Think of it this way. If they were to optimise for GCN; VLIW4 and VLIW5 shader cores, the amunt of effort required to get an even 15% performance boost over all the architectures would perhaps be similar to that of getting a 30% boost on GCN alone.
I own a VLIW4 card, but hell, I'd rather they optimise for GCN than my card. Sure I won't get nice goodies like the others, but the day I upgrade they will be even faster.
Of course, the numbers above are made up, and just for the sake of representation.
I'm saying this from the standpoint of a microcontroller programmer and amateur electronics junkie... Imagine how it is at an ASIC level such as a GPU.Edited by Artikbot - 10/7/13 at 12:31am
