best overclockable ram w/in budget

Thread Starter
i just built my first rig a few weeks ago and i bought some Corsair 1GB (2x512MB) PC2-6400 Cas 4 ram. sadly i didnt do my research on the ICs till a few hours ago and i realized im stuck with v2.1 PROMOS that cant be OCed past 850mhz and be stable. im trying to sell my corsairs and buy some D9s. my question is, are the RAM in the IC sticky still available for purchase on newegg (or stores of that nature)? like the crucial ballistix, are the ones on newegg still D9 chips? or are they a different IC?

This ram right here OC's like a MONSTER

I have 1 stick in there and on an accidental 2:3 ratio my ram was set at about 540mhz+ on 2.2v before it couldnt go any higher. I couldnt figure it out why I couldnt OC my E6300 any higher since it was only like 350 FSB or something. Lol untill i figured out my ratio I was on the 2:3 and the ram just finally couldnt go any higher. Yet for $115 ram reaching speeds of DDR2-1080+ is quite amazing. my timings were set to 5-5-5-15 too.

Either way I run it right now at 429mhz 4-3-4-9 or 4-4-4-12 since my friend says not to run it like that. Also Super PI didint seem to make it any faster but in the end i'm saying too many people overlook this amazing ram.

Here it is right here

You wont be dissapointed

Or if you want dual channel these buffalo firestix OC I know at least to 515mhz
since pook had his running at that

what is overall better when OCing? 2 x 1GB sticks or 4 x 512MB? will 4 x 512Mb in dual channel give me a overall better speed than 2 x 1GB in dual channel?

I'd say go for a 1GB modules instead of 2x512. And when the time comes you'll be able to get the 2nd 1GB module.

No, you won't be loosing any sleep over single channel vs dual channel in terms of performance and/or overclocking. The difference in performance is very minimal but from what I can see, single channel overclock just a tad higher more and with ease.

ok thanks. i have one more question, if i buy a 1GB stick now, and another 1GB stick that is exactly the same in a couple months, can i run them in dual channel? or do they have to be in a dual channel kit?
