http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/radeon-r9-280x-third-party-round-up,3655-6.html

The gigabyte is rated as the third quietest 280x behind the DC2T and HIS but it seems noisy to me based on this. The Vapor X is loud as hell at high rpm which is why I dialed mine down. I mean check out the vid in that link, that would be like gaming on a factory floor. Stupid loud. Cooling on the vapor x is excellent though, at 38% mine doesn't go over 65c. I posted my fur mark earlier, hit 70c on auto fan curve. That's stellar IMHO. No reason to run fans at high rpm with that kind of cooling. The DC2T caps at 42% fan speed and that's the only card that gets consistently praised as a quiet card. But at load the Asus runs a lot hotter than the Vapor X, though 75c isn't a bad temp.

Anyway, 79% seems absolutely bonkers to me lol. I don't think I've ever run a card at 79% fan speed.

Same experience bro, I can hear the case fans more than the windforce fans. I have set the GPU auto as it is running 24/7. I did not touch the GPU settings, I just fire it to run the miner 24/7.

Yeah looks exactly the same on the rev. 2.0 card, but with voltage @1.2v. I tuned down my fans and now the card is sitting @ 75° C/45% most of the time which is very quiet. Since the VRMs can not be monitored, I hope they will be fine. But I guess they will. My case has an overall good airflow and the low voltage should do good.

yah they are sky rocketing and fast seems everytime i go on newegg and look there higher and higher. i was reading a report somewhere cant remember where but i was looking around and there saying that the reason the cost is going up is do to the fact that bit coin and lite coin miners are buying them up 3 or 4 gpus at atime sometimes even more. making them super scarce. not sure how true that all is but the more i read around forums the more im starting to think it is true. im hoping they go back down so the gamer can get there hands on some of them. i was lucky to get the ones i did when they had them at the prices they were at. and when i mean lucky i mean as soon as i hit the pay button for my last two i ordered the page refreshed and they were sold out.

like i said before the two gigabyte ones were 299.99 a piece and the xfx ones i have coming in soon were 309.99. now there 399.99 and 419.99. its crazy there getting back up there into the nvidia price ranges.

just and fyi not sure if your heart is set on sapphire but the xfx gpus are now in stock on newegg even though the price has gone way up on them...

For what it's worth, that review was done using the Rev1 Gigabyte. The ones you buy now should be Rev2, which uses the 780-style Windforce cooler which is supposed to be a quieter version

Thanks for the input

I reinstalled MSI Afterburner and will report back if I get the 99% utilization again

Two problems since re-installing Afterburner:
1.) I no longer have visibility into GPU2 temperature (through AB)
2.) GPU2 fan speed is reported as 20%, which doesn't follow my fan profile (I've selected GPU2 in settings and it shows same profile as GPU1, which is at 45%)

hmm strange. are you getting the same issue using the gigabyte overclock and monitoring tool or is it just the msi afterburner..?? might be a software compatability with the new beta drivers. ill download the msi after burner and see if mine do the same thing. ill get back with you in a few...
