R9 280X can consume up to 300W. hmm, which R9 280X you planned to buy?[/quote]

Define one way to find out plz.. buy and put it for test run? i wish to buy and use straight away instead of buy, test, sell then buy others.. quite a hassle for me..

im looking at MSI R9 280X GAMING 3G or GIGABYTE R9 280X 3GB. Will this be a good upgrade comparing my aging CFx 6850?

FYI, Giga is voltage locked and MSI is not, so if you planning to get more performance by OC-ing it, MSI will be more worth to buy.

yup. golden green 550w gold, have benn tested with SLI 570 and SLI 670 with 4 HDD, never got a problem. OCCT test result was great, 5 years warranty just like seasonic, good PSU with funny name "Super Flower" biggrin.gif

my proc is not OC-able since it's not a K version, 280X run in 1.256v @ 1160 / 1600 daily.

I see whenever I bump my Memory anything higher on my CLub3d R9-280x my games either crash or so. I can't even ump the core clock any hhigher than my stock. My clock is 1100/1500mhz with 1.2663V core and 1.5V memory.

If I overclock I want to achieve 1600MHz on memory and 1200MHz at least on core to actually make it worth overclocking

try upping the voltage with afterburner or trixx. memory need set to 1.6v to be able to raise 1600 or 1650, there's no performance benefit though with only raising the memory without also raising the core.

Ok so what should I raise the core to you think? I can go 1.3V iin MSI afterburner. Like i said many times before I'm on 2560x1440 @ 96Hz

yup, friend of mine bring dual 670 to my home specially to test this PSU back in the day, and test it with watt meter or something? i forgot the name, the one you put on the terminal and has digital display. test it on metro last light and heaven to get it max load. maybe because my proc is only 4570 wich non-oc proc, the result not too high, maybe if i'm using 4770k oc @ 4.4Ghz the watt will go up to 600w, for sure it will eat more power than default i5 no? smile.gif

Here's what you should consider IMO. That PSU is most likely enough to handle your Phenom and a 280x, BUT, how old is that thing and do you want to trust it with a very expensive GPU. Here is how I think, I just spent $500 on graphics do I want to trust that to an old PSU that has just enough power or get something with a tad more power that is newer. For less than $100 you can get a very good unit that will give you both and be more efficient. If it were me I would be PSU shopping but that's just me.
