Nah, just a little dot in the middle of the GPU die. Set the HSF down on it and give a little pressure and then check to see how it spreads. The GPU die is so smooth and flat it, should spread really well with little to no effort. You could always add a little extra TIM if there isn't enough.

Get the Sapphire Vapor-X or Toxic. You won't be disappointed.

So sapphire is a good brand?? Just a bit burned becuase my r9 290 is leaking some sort of a weird oil out of the back? But if its a good brand ill buy another. So sapphire is better than the asus and gigabyte versions

Have you considered RMAing the card? You should be able to RMA it with Althon Micro and get a new card within 2-3 weeks.

I'm not sure how their reference cards are, but their custom cards are excellent. They have very good cooling. Coolers like the Tri-X, Toxic and Vapor-X consistently outperform competing coolers, like the Windforce and DCUII. Here you can see that the Tri-X has the best temps compared to the MSI Gaming and ASUS DCUII TOP. If you're getting a 280X you should look into reviews of the Toxic and Vapor-X models. The Vapor-X in particular runs very cool due to the Vapor chamber, which most other cards don't have.

I will be RMA the card, but here in Australia it usually takes weeks if not months to get a card back from the vendor if they repair it so i need to buy a new one for when its down plus ill prob use the new r9 290 on a even newer build down the track.

My budget does not really alow for an up to r9 290 and the games i play arent demanding enough to really warrant buying one so i will be purchasing a r9 280x because they are better than the 770gtx, are they not?

Yes i had a quick look on newegg and there were quite alot of complaints on the sapphire r9 280x vapor-x and the toxic, i dont know if newegg reviews are something that I should really rely on thou?

I do love the look of the r9 280x toxic as it will go really well with my asrock z87 oc formula board

Are the premium 270xs (msi's hawk, sapphire's toxic) worth the additional cash? Do they overclock better?
I'm looking at picking up two of them now that the mining hype has died down

Some of the higher end cards have a lot of room to overclock and some are already close to there max. The Hawk and Toxic seem to be good overclocking cards.

Afaik the Hawk, Toxic, Lightning, Devil, and so on use highest binned chips. You have a good chance of getting a chip with high ASIC that will overclock well on air.

These are also all premium cards and should have no trouble staying cool even when overclocked.

Ah, I see, so it will take a while to RMA.

As far as the 280X being better than the GTX 770, I think that's kind of subjective. Some people really like the 770. The 770 is basically just a 680. The advantage to having a 280X is that the 280X has 3GB VRAM on a 384-bit bus with high memory bandwidth. The GTX 770 only has 2GB of VRAM on a 256-bit bus. This means that in really demanding titles or at high resolution, the 280X comes out on top.

The Toxic does look good. The Sapphire logo lights up in yellow.

It also has a sick looking backplate. I'm really disappointed that my two Tri-X don't have these features. The cooler is the same afaik so you'd think the Tri-X could have the light up logo and backplate. My only complaints about my cards.

EDIT: Oh, and Newegg reviews might not matter much. I've read reviews before buying stuff before, and there's always a few people that get dead cards or have serious problems. Yet, I've NEVER received a dead card from Newegg or had any issues with them that weren't my own fault. I also buy primarily Sapphire stuff and have yet to have a dead card from them. If you know what you're doing with computers, you're careful and ground yourself before putting cards in, make sure you install drivers correctly, and know how to optimize Windows and overclock properly, you aren't going to have problems. Some people THINK they know what they're doing but don't, and I guarantee a lot of those bad reviews are from idiots.
