Apparently my 570 used up to around 450W at load yet only specced a 550W minimum PSU, why is the recommended wattage so high for this 280x?

Because they want you to buy a better PSU. Look at the 7970s they use more power but only have 500w recommended for some of them.

Oh right you're saying it shouldn't use as much as 370.

Hello fellow OCN'ers,

I am in dire need of some first hand experiences with the MSI gaming 280x and the ASUS dc2 280x.
I love the bang for buck ratio on the 280x but I am very picky about noise. Now I don't really care about noise under load because you can adjust the fan speed under load as pleased.
But the one thing that annoys me is idle noise of a GPU. I owned the MSI 760 gaming which was quite quiet but still too audible in idle I felt. I also owned the MSI 680 TF but that was way too loud in idle for me. These cards scored 25dbA and 27dbA respectively in idle according to techpowerup reviews.
Now the reviews of the MSI gaming 280x and asus dc 2 280x show 28 and 31 dbA in idle respectively.
So that worries me a lot! I don't know in how far I can trust/compare these results from techpowerup, but still.
Anyone wants to comment on the idle noise levels of their GPU's? As I am looking for the most quiet on in idle.
Could the minimum idle fan speed be lowered by a BIOS mod and is someone here capable of doing that?

My alternative is buying a 3 month old asus dc2 670 which is legendary for low idle and load noise. But I am worried that the 2gb will limit me on the long run.

Techpowerup reviews of the asus and MSI:

http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/MSI/R9_280X_Gaming/25.html

Also wondering why the asus scores a lot higher than the MSi? Apart from apparent heat issues. Anyone noticed bad coil whine on their MSI 280x? As that seems to be an issue judging from the new egg feedbacks.

Guys i have problem and i dont know what is wrong. This is my first AMD card, so here we go. I have Asus R9 280X Direct CU 2 TOP and when i play Mafia 2 i have huge FPS drop. I notice that clocks are going down ( from 1070mhz to 300-500mhz, on memory too ). What is wrong ?

I checked with other games like: Farcry3, Crysis3, Grid2 and Battlefield3 - everything is working great. Only with Mafia 2 i have this problem.

Drivers: ATI Display Driver 13.101WHQL for Win7 32/64 ( from Asus site ).

A excellent vid showing off Crossfire Configs of the current R9 line-up... to bad the 290 non X is not there biggrin.gif
So to sum it up... a crossfire config of 270xs will give you 290x-like performance for those who asked..pretty awesome peformance for a lower price then that of the 290x if you dont mind the disatvantages of a dual card setup.
A crossfire of 280xs vaporizes the single 290x and ofc a Crossfire of 290xs is just... Godlike biggrin.gif
