The Road to 8.1

Thread Starter
Background

So last week a few bits in my rig died. GPU and sound card causing POST loops, corrupted bios and a busted boot loader. Hard drives are fine I just have to RMA the GPU and grab a new sound card.

So the boot loader for windows is dead. I don't have a repair disk lying around and there isn't anything in my windows install I cannot afford to lose. My university upgraded to 8.1 over the holiday and well it's not bad. I had windows 8 on my backup and it worked mainly because I used the back up for watching movies from the other end of my bed and it works.

Now what's with this thread? IDK I figured I would make it and post how this change goes and to also share any issues a fairly standard (from windows perspective) user has.

Also this thread may take a week or two to fully mature, comments welcome.

TL;DR?

PC dead == new windows install.

Step One.... [Complete]

Use back up rig to acquire new armaments:
Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)

Shiny is here: Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)

Step Two...

Wait for RMA while looking at the shiny... Or pull out my SSD and install via back up rig....

Hum.... thinking.gif

Despite my initial hatred for windows 8 I recently moved to 8.1 (dreamspark hollllah).
It has been running really nicely,I have had no issues what so ever.
It even downloaded the latest driver for my GTX 670 from nVidia, not the standard microsoft crap

I gotta chime in two things: 1) Dreamspark Premium for engineering students is AWESOME! I just wish I got Office 365 as well ;D (even though I already have Office 2013). 2) Windows 8.1 is not too bad actually, some of the new features/enhancements make it way better than Windows 8. Also, the Modern apps are getting much better, especially the native MS ones (like Mail, Finance, etc).

Engineering... Technically I spose. Computing is one of those weird middle grounds. Been using Win 8.1 for the past two weeks and it's not too bad. Planning on whacking the SSD in the backup this weekend and installing the OS.

Card is in for RMA so it should be back with me before Wednesday. Hopefully. Will be back up before the end of next week. biggrin.gif

Edit-
Got an email today. RMA Success biggrin.gif

So... RMA came through... Shiny things happened. First thing I did was install classic shell. Same thing they have at uni. Now it's windows 8 without the annoying windows 8.... Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)

Gone with this for the moment until I get my 1440p screen back on the rig: Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)

Metro is still there, don't mind using it for the occasional thing. Unlike my Win7 install I am finding it hard to get a theme I am happy with... Everything is soo.... Square...

Now onwards to installing more drivers and games. Also I noticed Win7 reserved 100MB of the install drive. Win 8.1 reserved 350MB... Interesting.

So after 5 days of using it I am pretty happy. Win 8.1 feel responsive when doing things. (Might be thanks to a New install)

I haven't used metro at all yet thanks to Classic Shell and for some reason my Metro 2033, which wouldn't even start on Win7 runs fine on this install. Probably a random thing.

Things that currently annoy me... I have a password set and lock screen on start up and it disables num lock when I have first started to computer. Also everything is square. Everything just looks so sharp and boxy. As a MC mod I deal with squares every day and having them in my OS annoys me.

What can I say so far? The OS is fine. If you get annoyed with Metro you can use an alternative start menu and avoid it. I currently have no major issues with it and I think the OS might eb slightly faster performance wise than Win 7. Take that with a pinch of salt though as my Win 7 install was reasonably tampered with and over 2 years old.
