To "beat" DA 2013 they would probably go with bigger number.

6500 isn't in line with previous hardware. 6400 is more plausible for 30*30 image.

Either or wont matter as you likely wouldn't be able to tell the difference.

Hardware is only part of the picture. Xai went up to 5,001 CPI and Xai/Sensei both go through their CPI range "in steps of 1" but when measured only steps of 90 change the actual CPI. I could see Steelseries adding a 6500 setting that measures 6400 or lower just to one-up the DA.

Mouse reviewers won't be measuring.

SS released a firmware update a while back that allows changes in increments of 1 CPI on the Sensei, I'm assuming of course the non-90 steps are interpolated.

To my knowledge though the Xai is still broken in that regard and only registers changes in 90 step increments.

Xai's 5001 CPI setting is actually 5040. First release actually scaled to the value. In fact anything over 4951 was automatically bumped to 5040. Rather familiar with the people involved with the Xai.

Sixxxxxx is correct about additional FW allowing adjustment via interpolation of MCU. Release Sensei had similar scaling coherent with Xai, though different coder.

With that said, they could indeed just bump number as suggested, but it would likely piss off a certain competitor.

True, I actually got a older pre release firmware through some emailing where I can set it to 5040 instead of 5001. Doesn't work with the software though, had to set everything with the LCD at the bottom.

That 1 extra CPI was meant as gag.
