Cooler master GeminII S524 + Ballistix Elite memory = no dice? Or - recommend me a different heatsink for my new build

I ordered this heatsink yesterday for my new case (Evga Hadron) and totally spaced forgetting I have Ballistix Elite memory, which are stupidly tall.

I won't be at home for a few days, so I can't measure the dimms, but the order is will call so I can still cancel it. Googling the Elite all I can find is Amazon.com saying the dimms are 2.1" tall, that doesn't sound unreasonable, but I don't know if it's accurate. Cooler Master says the heatsink has 47mm of clearance for memory modules. To further confuse things I found 1 review on Amazon where the dude claims to have this heatsink with this memory and it say it just fits with the sink touching the top of the memory fins. Math tells me with 47mm of space 2.1" tall modules aren't going to fit, even tightly. Possibly Amazon got the dimensions wrong. Anyone with knowledge here who would care to chime in I'd be super thankful. I can't find a single other spec list for this memory.

system specs: ASRock z77 itx + EVGA Hadron case. EVGA says coolers up to 5.5 inches tall will fit. I'm not loyal to a brand, and I don't care if it's a tower or flat style. Since I do have a small iTX board I will need something that won't block my memory or 1 PCI-E slot.

Some of the tallest dimms out there + a tiny iTX board are just a crappy combo lol.

You just might be in luck.

According to the technical drawings on CM website it is 47mm from bottom of cooler/top of CPU to bottom of fins. Top of CPU is 7-8mm above motherboard. That is 54-55mm from motherboard. Assuming Ballistx Elite is 2.1" / 53.3mm so it will be very close if. wink.gif

Have to agree it is a carp combo.. but I'm not thrilled with the ITX boards either.. Micro ATX seem a much better size.. CPU is farther from PCI slots and RAM both.

hummm I didn't take into account the hiegth of the CPU socket, I'm good with .5mm of space, or even the cooler coming in contact with the memory fins, just as long as it fits. Now Ijust need to poke around for a ppossible better solution.

Anyone reading this, with no budget which cooler would be the top here? Seems like everything I'm finding is either too tall or too wide.

You are making the assumption that RAM slot allows RAM to bottom out on motherboard. My ram sets a few mm taller than actual RAM measures. wink.gif

So maybe it still won't fit hummmmm DOH. I'm going to cancel the Heatsink order and shop around a bit more.

Look at the cooler shape. The width at 47mm clearance is about 50mm from center of CPU. I'm guessing your RAM is more than 50mm from center of CPU. thumb.gif

Edit:
Test the cooling with fan pushing air into cooler and than try it with fan pulling air out of cooler. My guess it CPU and motherboard will be cooler with fan pulling air from cooler. wink.gif
