2x 7970 DC2T now or after 280X drops?

Thread Starter
Hi, I've had a 6850 for way too long and will buy a graphics card soon.
After reading some reviews for the 280X I realise that it will be better to just get a (pair of) 7970(s), right now I can get Asus DC2T 's for £220 and I don't think they will drop much further even after the 280X comes out. I really wanted to get a 290/X but it seems it will be outside my budget.

Do you think I should buy them now or wait until the 280X comes out? I don't want the cards to go out of stock, that's the only reason for my worries.

Thanks

If you are in "need" of a new card, then I'd just suggest buying that DC2T right now. The new 280X's are quite literally a rebadged HD 7970 w/ 5mhz over the Ghz clocks. And its going to be coming in at a higher price than the DC2T.

And if a price drop happens on the current 7970 stock, that would end up happening soon, which most retailers should price match any price drop and give you the difference if the price drops within a week or two.

And two 7970s will absolutely stomp a 290X/GTX 780/Titan. Just keep in mind the usual problems that can arise with dual cards (personal experience with Crossfire 7970s for me was less than stellar).

Those cards are huge, 3 slot monsters. You'd get no clearance between cards even with the spacing on your board. What effect would that have on temps for the top card? I like the design of the cooler for the asus but this factor has me looking elsewhere. (I'm trying to pick a 7970 to crossfire ATM).

also remember both asus dcii and matrix use 3 slot cooler. so you need atleast 4 slots gap (preferably 5 slots) for running cards in CF so that you have good airflow and the upper card does not suffocate.

The second DC2T that I could've bought was only going to be in my system for a little while until it went to a different PC anyway, the fact that they are 3 slot coolers isn't as annoying as the adapters I would need to get 3 more 8pin power connectors since this PSU only has one 8 and one 6, I only bought one 7970 in the end and my 6850 will go in that other PC.
