What does 8x and 16x sli mean?

Does it have to do with the rate at which information is exchanged among the cards?
I would like to play around with the settings. I believe my motherboard 680i LT has set SLI to 16x automatically I would like to change it to 8x to see the difference.

You cant change it for say... its the pci-e bandwidth between the cards , the board and the cpu. Say the board has 2 slots that are x16 pci-e 2.0 long. The first runs at x16 pci-e 2.0 and the second might run at x8 pci-e 2.0, the speed forsay is the same but their is twice as much data going over thew x16 as the x8. Okay here's the kicker when you put a second card in some slots on some motherboards it might drop for first card to x8 as well.

Yours looks like it supports 2 x16 pci 1.0 slots i think.

pci-e x16 1.0 = pci-e x8 2.0 = pci-e x4 3.0

It shouldn't bottleneck your cards much at all from what I'm reading on their website.
