OK boys and girls ... Here I am, an "old man" (60+), looking to build a screaming machine. Not sure how much over clocking I’ll be doing, but figure if it meets your specs it'll do ANYTHING I want to do faster, better, and with the latest technology.

So here's what I'm looking at:

Motherboard: Antec Nine Hundred Black Steel ATX Mid Tower Computer Case - Retail

Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 Conroe 2.4GHz LGA 775 Processor Model BX80557E6600 - Retail

Memory: OCZ Platinum Revision 2 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model OCZ2P800R22GK - Retail

Graphics: ASUS EN8800GTS/HTDP/640M GeForce 8800GTS GDDR3 PCI Express x16 HDCP Video Card - Retail

Power Supply: SeaSonic M12 SS-700HM ATX12V/ EPS12V 700W Power Supply - Retail

Hard Drives: Two (2) Western Digital Caviar SE WD1600JS 160GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive - OEM

DVD/CD: One (1) - SONY 16X DVD±R DVD Burner With 5X DVD-RAM Write Black IDE Model DRU120C - Retail and One (1) - PLEXTOR 16X DVD±R DVD Burner With White bezel,AUTOSTRATEGY,PoweRec,10X DVD+R DL Write Black SATA Model PX-755SA - Retail

Cooling: ZALMAN CNPS9500 LED 92mm 2 Ball Cooling Fan with Heatsink - Retail

Case: GIGABYTE 3D AURORA GZ-FSCA1-ATB Black Aluminum ATX Full Tower Computer Case - Retail OR Antec Nine Hundred Black Steel ATX Mid Tower Computer Case - Retail

Suggestions, comments, critiques appreciated.

Theres some good choices there that will make a very good system.

The only thing I'd pick up on (if you want to overclock that is) is to maybe drop the Zalman for a Tuniq Tower 120, its the best air cooler about right now and probably just a bit more expensive.

And may I suggest an ASUS P5B-Deluxe as a motherboard. Its a classic overclocker, very highy regarded amongst OCN members and possibly a Creative X-fi sound card if you're into that sort of thing

Oh and Welcome to OCN

Nice Build. However I would definately go with the ANTEC NINE HUNDRED case over the Gigabyte IMO. Also can you please list a Motherboard. For a Motherboard suggestion the ASUS P5B DELUXE is a nice one.

hi and welcome.....please fill in your system specs (as soon as your rig is finished of course) under userCP......... about the system,......its looking good to me,......however i would go with an pcixpress 32x mobo that supports 2x 16x pcixpress,.....its more future proof, you can put in another 8800 videocard later

PS: i dont know if the ASUS P5B DELUXE has 2 16x pcixpress so if it already has them, if so, dont bother looking for another..........

I will second this, from what I hear it is one of the best mobos around for overclocking.

Also in your original post your Motherboard link is to a case.

Greetings,

CPU: If you wanted to save some cash, consider the E6400 (see sig for OC). You loose the extra cache memory though...

Antec 900: Make sure that the rear IO panel will accomodate your video card.

Video Card: Same model, but take a look at the EVGA (great warranty) or the XFX (dual warranty),

CPU cooler: Take a look at some with more real estate (tower coolers) like the Tuniq, Scythe or Noctua.

PSU: PC P&C makes some of the best PSU's out there. VERY stable and reliable.

How about 2 hard drives from the Seagate 7200.10 range? These are almost as fast as Western Digital's Raptors, but are a lot cheaper.

HDDs going to be in RAID 0?

Why not get the Seagate 7200.10 series, like adam mentioned? Fastest SATA 7200RPM drives.

Welcome to OCN btw.

Well you may need to get a 32x PCI-E motherboard due to the fact that 8800GTX/GTS cards cant run in 8x for somereason in SLI or in Single mode.

It depends what you're using this rig for. Like Syrillian stated, you could easily drop the 2MB L2 Cache and save money to go with the 6400. However if you're not intensively using this rig for anything serious I would suggest dropping even further to a 6300 and OC'ing it.

The 6300 will get you to 2.8GHz with 1:1 @ 400MHz x 7 multiplier.

The 6400 will get you to 3.2GHz with 1:1 @ 400MHz x 8 multiplier.

This is just based off your 800MHz RAM. Of course you could always use different ratios but it's nicer to keep things simple and stable.

*Edit: Saving this money could help you fix that problem that Enterprise noticed.
