New laptop for school. suggestions appreciated!

Hello ocn, I come to ask for your wisdom. The time has come to replace my laptop, an eight year old inspiron 6400 handed down to me by my uncle. This will mainly be used for school.

What is your maximum budget?
£5-600, give or take

What country are you in?
United kingdom

What will be the uses of this laptop?
Mainly programming in visual studio and the like, general school work, web browsing. Nothing out of the ordinary and nothing to taxing.

Do you have brand loyalty or care which brands we select for you?
None whatsoever, although I have liked the look of Lenovo recently.

What screen size do you require?
About 15"

What screen resolution do you require?
Not really sure on specific res, but as long as it is decent should be fine.

Are you looking to buy NEW or would refurbished/recertified/used be okay?
Obviously preferably new but if push came to shove I would consider it.

How long should the battery last? (Under optimal conditions, no movies/games/heavy internet)
>6 hours

What games would you like to play with your laptop? And on what settings?
Not really looking for too much gaming, although if it will run total war and the like I'd be chuffed.

What operating system do you need? (if any)
I will be installing Windows 7.

Is there a certain style of laptop you want? (aluminum, black, gaming, etc.)
If at all possible I would like a metal one, if not it must be sturdy and more than anything, portable.

How much hard drive space do you need? Not really a huge consideration, anything over 100gb should do fine.

Do you need any special hardware? (blue ray, webcam, specialty ports, etc.)
A webcam would be jolly nice.

Is there anything else we need to know?
I haven't really paid much attention to laptops recently so any and all advice is appreciated. To sum up I'm looking for a laptop with decent performance, good portability and aesthetics and good battery life.

Thanks a lot!
Alan.

Not sure if the UK has Dell Outlet but that's an option.

I found this laptop from Lenovo for £599.

(Grab the Lenovo IdeaPad Z500 - White)

It has a quad core i7 which it is really good for your tasks.
6GB RAM, GT 635M 2GB and 1 TB HDD which it also supports your needs.
However, I do not know how long it'll last, but I do know you can tweak some settings to make it last longer such as turning off the dedicated GPU, lower the brightness and etc.
