What about North Bridge ?

Thread Starter
What about north bridge cooling ? Is it necessary ? I always hear about watercoolers who use a small fan to cool the north bridge but honestly i'm running a WC loop since 2 years without any kind of cooling for the north bridge. My PC is on 24/7 and i never had any problem. But today i took the temperature of the north bridge with a laser pointer, and the heatsink of the NB was 55'C while the rest of the board was around 33'C... Sounds a bit high temperature under normal usage (wasn't gaming). And since the laser thermometer only took the temperature of the heatsink, i assume the northbridge chip was hotter than 55'C

So, should i be worried about my north bridge getting too hot ?

My motherboard is a msi z68a if it can help

your fine, my NB is at 51c idle and sometimes can get to 63c at load, depending what type of load.
you can get the temp specs from the manufacturer, mine is the X58 and intel says I am good to 100c,
but I don't ever want to see it over 70c.
you can also remove the NB heatsink and put better thermal paste on it,
I just did this for a friend on his 5 year old system and his temp went down 6c
as the old paste was crap.

Sorry i'm not sure how it's called, i'm talking about the thing with the blue heatsink labelled MSI, just under the RAM. It is very hot to the touch, can barely keep my fingers on it

That is the PCH that you are talking about. It is similar (if my understanding is correct) to the south bridge on AMD systems. With Intel, the NB/SB setup went out with the 5 series chipsets (H55, P55 and X58),

You should not need any extra cooling on the PCH at all. I have run 3 chipsets (Z77, P67 and H61) without any direct cooling at all (talking no airflow to it at all aside from backwash off the GPU and ave not ran into any issues. If you feel it is running too hot, then you can always direct a 120/140 mm fan at it and be perfectly fine.

Using your skin is not a good way to measure temperature. Direct contact with hot metal will start to cook your flesh even at 50C frown.gif

It's not a good way to judge temperature either. When touching something hot, your nerve endings start to send "panic" signals. Those signals are translated to a feeling of danger in your brain. You made this post because you became emotionally concerned about the safety of your motherboard. wink.gif

also if the heatsink is hot it's doing it's job by pulling heat from the chip out to the fins so air flow can take the heat away.
