Looking for fast 1TB+ HDD under $150

Thread Starter
What's the fastest 1TB or larger drive I can get for under $150? I'm running 4 VM's off a pair of Western Digital WD15EARX 1.5TB green drives in RAID0 and they just can't keep up.

While this is a good bit more than I wanted to spend, what about the 1TB WD Velociraptor? Is it worth the near double in price over other similarly sized drives?

I run three or four VMs off a single 1TB RE4. Does alright for that purpose.

You want some drive(s) with a decent IOPS rating that can handle randoms well.

I agree with the Constellation drive. That's a good option for your budget.

Thanks for the suggestions! I'll take a look at them.

I guess I should also mention that I don't have a problem buying used or refurb drives, I probably won't have them for more than a year or two before I replace them with something new.

yessir.gif same here. I bought my 1TB RE4 from eBay for $50. smile.gif I ran the serial number on Western's website and found I still had 3 and a half years of warranty left. biggrin.gif

It's a little hit or miss, but you're more than 50% likely to get a good drive. At half the cost, that's a mathematically sound trade-off for someone not needing enterprise-class mission critical support.
