Sorry but i have no experience trying this. So if i use an hdmi cable on my video card and hook it up to my hdtv is should i get picture and sound from the computer?

What im trying to do is get the sound from the computer to play through my surround sound system which is hooked up to my hdtv with an optical audio cable.

Should pc work same as a 360 or ps3 i can get audio normally with hdmi and dont need to hook up audio cable at all to the surround sound just to hdtv it self.

I do this but I send audio to my 2.1 channel speakers. Just set the default audio to optical. In less your receiver is connected to your TV, I'm which case just pipe everything through your hdmi cable.

yes you can do that. just make sure the hdmi port is the primary sound device on your computer to get it to work right.

Ok good to know i always wanted to play some good looking pc games in 1080p on my hdtv. Does it actually look better or worse? I guess that depends on hdtv but i think it would be pretty cool. It might look good because im used to seeing 720p console games most of time.

I also might give steam big picture a go.

Chances are your monitor will look better. A lot of televisions have a lot of smudgy and ghosty blacks. Just make sure you are scaling it right too or else you will get blurry vision.

My HTPC goes to my 1080P TV and all sound comes out of the HDMI connection

FX 6300 @ 4.4
HD5870 1gb 942/1250 (connected to the HDMI port and works default)

I don't know what your gpu is but if it has onboard hdmi port and u have the correct audio drivers will work by connecting the hdmi cable.

I used to have a tv with no hdmi so just used dvi to vga and a 3.5mm to 3.5mm and it worked fine that way also.

Yes, you may have to adjust the over/underscan to fit properly.
Once again...
