How is he overrated?
-2nd best selling rap artist of all time
-3 certified classic solo albums(Me Against The World, All Eyez On Me, 7 Days Theory) and 2 very good ones
-Conscious rap artist with the most impact by far
-Made some of the most widely celebrated rap songs(Dear Mama, Changes, California Love, Keep Ya Head Up)
-Frequently mentioned as rappers' favorite rapper. That's right, 2Pac is your favorite rapper's favorite rapper
I could go on but really, how is he overrated? The list of rappers that have accomplished what Pac did is very very short. Sure, he wasn't the best in terms of lyrical dexterity but in terms of lyrical depth and emotion he's a top 3 emcee. He could rap about pretty much anything and make classic tracks after classic tracks. He's one of the most versatile rappers of all time as well. Street poetry? Check. Gangsta rap? Check. Club banger? Check. Socially/politically conscious tracks? Check. Dope beats? Check.
Who else can boast about all of this? I don't really care that he didn't do multisyllabic rhymes a la Pun or Pharaoe Monch, that wasn't his strength. People love him for what he brought to the table, not what he did not do. You could compile a list of all the best rappers and none of them did what 2Pac did even if they had a career spanning 15 years. I feel people give way too much credit to emcees who are good on the technical side of rapping. Those rappers are a dime a dozen in the game. I could name hundreds of them, most of which people never heard about. These cats could spit 100 bars easily but as soon as you'd ask them to write a 16 bars song complete with a hook a good melody and an engaging theme, they'd freeze over.
2Pac was a rare breed of emcee. Often imitated but never matched. He absolutely deserves his frequent mentions as the best rapper to have graced the mic.
