That's weird. All SATA cables are exactly the same with a single exception: SATA I cables don't have the tab that locks in place. The circuitry is the same for any. It sounds like a crappy cable, and if you don't have a spare, HDDs have just barely started to break the SATA I speed limit.

Some early SATA I cables or lower-quality SATA II cables might fail to reach 6Gb/s speeds because they aren't made to as-high standards, but they're backwards and forwards compatible, meaning the circuitry is the same meaning the same cables can be used and theoretically achieve the maximum device-supported speeds.

SATA cables are just pins and straight wires.... nothing more... no twisted pairs, no special insulation. If SATA cables are bent too much, they can get damage and you may have the fluke bad one.

I've had one personally fail on me ever... it as a DFI one. smile.gif

I think I was just very unlucky. The cable was the only one the shop had. It's 1m long but thick. I think I'll take it back, the store is across the road.

I'm now using my oldest cable, seems to be working perfectly.

It is unusual to find a cable that is so bad that it can't work correctly with a SATA III SSD. The IRST UI is one of the few programs that will actually display the true SATA speed between a drive and the SATA interface.

Any SATA storage drive actually "negotiates" the link speed between it and the SATA interface. In your case the cable or the connector was so poor that the best link that could be established was SATA II. That cable must be defective.

Someone a while back posted a link to a test where multiple SATA cables were connected together for a total of ~10 feet, I can't recall the actual length, but it was much longer than anyone would ever use inside a PC case. That multi-cable cable was then connected to a mobo and SSD, and benchmarks were run on the SSD. The result was no different than one short cable.

IMO, most if not all SATA cables are built as cheaply as possible. They should use twisted pair wiring, and have multiple shields. The connectors are terrible too, it's a miracle they work at all. The old 40 pin IDE PATA interface was slow, but the connections were much more solid.

Any SATA cable can have no latches, not just SATA I. Some SSDs made currently will not latch onto latching cables. I just bought some "SATA III" cables that have no latches, but they do have a raised spot that fits in a notch on the SATA ports on mother boards and drive bays. They fit better than some latched cables I've used.

40-pin IDE had solid connections because they had to get the signal as clean and simultaneously as possible. However, this is just not necessary with SATA since the protocol is based on high frequency, serial, and differential signaling. There's no need to over-engineer it.
