1866 can be had for about the same price as 1600 mhz and is not much slower than the faster ram. Its about the best bang/buck

I wouldn't want less than 8 gb myself (preferably 2x4gb kit for dual channel)

For the prices these days he's better off with 4gb for now and MAYBE adding some later if need be, which with a 5800k isn't very probable.

Id still say 2133mhz, 4gb. 2133mhz IS the budget minded choice from 2400mhz. 1866mhz and you start dealing with an an achillies heel.

The only time I hit more than 4gb of RAM is while I'm maxing out a 64 man bf3 server. That's not exactly representative of the RAM requirements his friend will need while using an Internet browser or word processing
