Thinking about picking up Beyerdynamic DT 880 Pro cans - Any thoughts?

I have a Xonar Essence ST coming in the mail, picked it up used for $87 to my door, and I now want to buy some decent but not crazy expensive headphones to use with it. My primary listening will be audio setup down below, except instead of using my Marantz receiver's DAC I will use my Xonar's DAC.

I have done some research and the Beyerdynamic DT 880 Pro seems like a good set of cans that will work well with the Xonar's headphone amp and may meet my needs, which are gaming, music, and movies/TV, in that order. I can get a new in box pair for ~@220 to my door.

What do you guys think? Any thoughts are appreciated, I have never had good cans before, I currently have a set of JVC HA-RX900 which to be honest I don't think are that great.

I don't need super deep bass or rumble, I much prefer a clean, neutral sound with a lot of detail and clarity.

They're nice. My friend tested an 880 and a 990. In the end he went with the 990 because he likes a lot of house music but the 880s sounded great. I honestly couldn't really tell that the 990 had more bass.

Tested on a Schiit Magni and Modi combo.

I ended up buying the AKG Q 701. Should be in end of next week.

Too busy at work, I bought the DT880 Pro.

You'll enjoy the Q701s. I had both them and the DT880s. I ended up keeping the 880s because they were more confortable for my head (I'm kind of sensitive to pressure on the top of my head), but the 701 sounded great. Very clean sound.

Yeah, better choice. The Q701's have a signature much closer to the sound you are after than the DT880's. Enjoy smile.gif

Well actually turns out I was so busy and distracted at work I didn't realize that I had actually ended up with the DT880. Looking back I think it would have been best to get the Q701, but too late, as my offer on ebay had been accepted on the DT880 Pro, 250 ohm.
I got them for ~183 to my door, I didn't realize when I made the offer that they were shipping from a California retailer so I had to pay sales tax. I asked them to cancel but they were going to leave it up as a dispute, which I believe gives me a strike for non-payment.
In any case I am sure the DT880 will be a good pair of cans and can always buy the Q701 with my next bonus check.

I went a little bit on a spending spree, bought the Xonar Essence ST, Xonar H6 7.1 expansion board, M&K MX-70 subwoofer, and the cans. Now I can't spend any more for at least a few months. I guess that means no R9-290X...sad-smiley-002.gif

Ahh, I'm sure youll be happy with the DT880's. I can assure you they are a nice sounding pair of headphones.
Nice sub btw. Was looking at that for myself at one point.

Well any cans will be better than my JVC HA-RX900's. I know these makes "best value" lists but really don't like them. The sub I was pretty happy to pick up because I am going to use it in my bedroom and so it needs to be compact. I have not heard it but I've read a lot of good things.
I love and hate ebay, I got some good deals I think, the Essence ST was $87 to my door and the MX-70 was $144 to my door, but it can be a danger to my wallet. I dropped over $400 this week.

That's right, keep that wallet nice and thin.
Sounds like you got some great deals though. Nice moves. thumb.gif
