SSD for Cache for other SSDs - Page 2

So what problems will we suffer by not having a manual TRIM function available? My PCIe Revo pretty much use to die after 6 months and I accounted it to the fact it couldn't manage trash... (completely guessing to be honest).

My X58/ICH10R will be getting upgraded in my new build - Asus p9x79-e ws. I can't find what the chipset is called. I only see it referenced to as Intel X79?

I over provisioned my raid0 ssd partition. 50gb out of two disks was a harsh blow to stomach though. I've set write caching buffer flushing to disabled.

Anything else?

ps.

Just about to trial software called SuperCache 5 from super speed. I'll post some feedback soon. But to be honest I think I'm just going to add a new Areca Raid controller to my upcoming build.

I know this isn't very scientific or measured experimenting but wanted to share some very quick results.

First up two Samsung Pro 840 256Gb in Raid0, limited by Sata2 3Gb/s, Intel ICH10R chipset.

As you would expect, basically maximizing out it's bottle-necked connectivity.

Now we have the same setup but this time using 8Gb of ram configured using SuperFetch5.

And then just for kicks and giggles the same drives connected and setup through Raid0 using Marvell biggrin.gif

For any interested the build used is in my sig. Windows 8 64bit installed and running on tested drives.

Interesting read results from the new software. Will be extending my testing period.

It probably died because the revos are garbage imo. lol.

Lack of TRIM = longer garbage collection routine and a little more wear on the NAND. Consumer use it doesn't make much of a difference.

haha. True. I use to think the same. But actually using Revo drives as additional space for apps that need to run fast has proven a great solution to having such hardware. I really just don't think they are up to running an OS.

Thanks for explaining TRIM further. Appreciate that.
