Windows 7 won't install, keeps taking me to the install screen.

6 months ago I guild my girlfriend a desktop, bought her a new case, a new ASUS mobo, new ivy bridge CPU, new raid max psu, and then threw together the ram, HDD and DVD drive from spares I had around the house. Anyway, the hard drive crashed yesterday.

So I have 2 spare SSD that I am in the middle of doing a personal build with, but I can put mine on pause so she has a desktop till her SSD comes in the mail. So I throw a windows install DVD in there along with my SSD and after about 10 minutes, it does it's normal reboot to continue installing and... It asks me to start the install over.... So something's went wrong I assume, so I start over.... Happens again... So I restart the computer and force it to boot strait to the SSD. And it shows the MBR having two installations of windows, but when I pick each one, it get stuck at the windows loading screen.

I try reformatting the hard drive and using an install USB.. No luck.

I try using the second SSD with both the USB and windows disk... No luck.

I just did an install 2 days ago on a friends computer with that windows USB, and my own 2 weeks ago with the windows DVD. I know one of the SSDs has had windows installed before also.

So I'm lost as to the problem but she needs this computer ASAP for a paper she needs to do to complete her undergraduate degree. Any ideas?

Hmm...sounds like it is booting directly to the installation source...though it should be giving that "press any key to install windows" message or whatever it says.

but I'd make sure that the first boot device is the SSD/HDD and then hit the key for boot options during the POST and select your USB drive or Optical drive. and make sure boot from other devices is enabled.

you could try installing the ssd on your own computer. then fully format it. Once that is done try re-installing in her desktop and install windows.

I've had that happen before. I just install on another computer, then put that drive into the new pc, and reactivate windows with the new key. it's the unprofessional way of doing it biggrin.gif

The odd thing is that the USB that I install from isnt even on the boot list (unless i go into the bios and place it there) I specifically leave it off so the only way to try and boot from a USB is through the bios. Its as if It is booting back into the installation, cant find where it left off, so it just ignores tha fact that it ever started and asks me to start over.

I am currently on my own desktop backing up all of her old data on her D Drive HDD, and then will try to reformat my spare SSD on here. When you say secure erase, What do you mean by that. I have heard that term thrown around before, but not sure what it means..

And my last case scenario is to install it on my machine and throw the drive in hers. But like you said, its kinda the cheesy way to do it. I would rather just solve the problem then put a band-aid on it :-/ But im willing to do what i need to do to get it done, even if it means something shameful like admitting defeat :-p

Either something's wrong with the mobo or with the usb stick or the usb ports
I would just try installing it on a different computer and then putting the disk back into her PC
