Best Ways to Test Internet Speed and Connection?

While I know most people use speedtest.net for such things, I was curious if there was any better way to test such things?

Also, there are other things to test such as packet loss of course (can use pingtest.net for that). But, when people are running speedtest they are running it directly form their machine and not necessarily testing the connection directly from the modem. Thus, not testing their entire network. For such a thing it seems the best way to test speed from the modem is to hook a computer directly into the modem and run speedtest. There must be some hardwired network option as an alternate you can run from your computer though. Even if that means being logged into your modem or router. If not, then I think it would be a nice solution for someone to come up with.

Speedtest only tests one stream at a time. (Down/Up) I heard that jPerf can max out NIC's within a network to get a better look at the throughput of the entire system. I don't know how to work it, though.

Seems like something to try out. A quick Google search garnered this article on it.

Just to confirm, do you want to test internet speed or LAN speed?

If you're testing internet speed, as long as your router isn't a major bottleneck (e.g. 100Mbps internet with Linksys WRT54GL or Gb with most consumer routers), then you should be getting roughly the same speed from a PC wired directly to the modem and a PC wired directly to the router (+/- a few Mbps).

For testing LAN speed, I use iperf.

For large-scale corporate deployment, there's the pricey IxChariot.
