do ram heat spreaders get hot enough to melt tubing....

Thread Starter
Looks like my mITX build is going to put the tubing in direct contact with the ram's heat spreaders. A quick stress test left them barely warm, but can they get hot enough to melt the tubing?
Not unless you're using inefficient DDR or RAMBUS RAM. DDR2 and even more so DDR3 do not consume a significant amount of power or put off a large amount of heat under most operating circumstances.

The game changes, of course, in extreme overclocking scenarios, but we're talking 2.5v or more being pushed through the sticks.

No way unless you really really overclock it and even then doesn't tubing first start to melt at like 100C?

Even if it did get hot enough, it still wouldn't get all the way through since your tubing is water cooled.

Well the real concern is what happens when the tubing is slightly warmed over time. Will they weaken or get brittle?

It should be ok.... what tubing are you using? Check the spec sheet and operational temperature range.

I was being a little 'tounge-in-cheek' but the very little heat that's generated by memory shouldn't be enough to do much more than slightly reduce the amount of plasticisers at the point of contact over a long time. The big concern should be where tubing meets coupling. That's far more likely to fail. If there is a concern, put a small peice of electrical tape between the tube and memory heat spreader.

the tubing will be fine due to the fact that it has water flowing through it which will keep it cool. the only time itll "melt" is if it comes into contact with extremely hot material ie >100C and even then it is unlikyl it will make the tube leak due to the water keeping it cool.

if you fill a plastic bottle with water and put it over a flame the bottle may warp but it will stay intact and the water will even boil.

Thanks guys. I suspected as much, but didn't know why. I'd would be nice to prevent the RAM heat from contributing to the system's heat content. Maybe I can squeeze a thermal insulation pad in there, if they make one thin enough.

A teeny piece of double sided foam tape will easily mitigate the (essentially minor) heat of the ram sinks. If you're using opaque tubes or fluid you won't even see it. This will also have the added benefit of minimizing any rubbing due to normal vibration which could over time wear a thin spot in the tube.
