New Mobo with HDDs in RAID 0 possible issues?

Thread Starter
Hi.

I will be building a new system. I have a couple hdds in raid 0 on the existing mobo. Unfortunately I can't keep this dieing pc on long enough to back up the hdds. Are there usually issues switching out mobos when it comes to reading off hdds in raid 0? I remember the kb size of splitting and other than that, are there other potential hurdles?

All the best,
Seb.

It is tricky sometimes. The new board must use the exact same controller. Even then, it's not always achievable.
I'm sure that's not what you wanted to hear. I'd just buy a very good board and reformat the drives.

the exact controller? As in the thing which decides how to split data over the two hard drives?

It does NOT have to be the controller. Generally, you just need a controller from teh same company.

No, same controller is not required.

The RAID controller writes metadata on the HDDs. All you need for it to work is another controller than can understand the metadata. RAID created on a Intel chipset (not a 3rd party controller) will basically work in any other Intel motherboard.

you wouldn't happen to know, or how to find out, what controller was used on an xfx 780i sli lga775 mobo would you? It runs an intel cpu, but i don't know if that means an awful lot.

The specs on NewEgg say "NV RAID" so the RAID you have is powered by the NVidia chipset and not anything Intel. As Nvidia have been out of the chipset biz for a while I would say you might just be sunk. As Duckie suggested though it is just the matter of finding a controller that can interpret the metadata written to the drives. You might get another Nvidia board to do it (and I believe there are still AMD boards out there for sale that might work). If you don't have that kind of thing laying around you are sunk though. Not to preach, but RAID leason one, don't trust anything you care about to RAID0 (or 5 if the drives are larger than 1TB). This is something I had to find out the hard way myself so don't feel too bad.

Edit:

If your rig will physically turn on (remove everything you don't need from 2nd/3rd video cards to optical drives) then you might be ok booting from a USB drive and then backing up to an external HDD. You could recover your data (using a Linux live image) if you just have a bad boot sector or the OS is corrupted.

Yup, RandomK is correct.... you will need a NVIDIA motherboard.

There is software that will attempt to read the metadata and rebuild an array for data recovery but I personally have never used one.

ah, this is all-round bad news. i know the majority is backed up, but there's certainly a few things which i don't want to lose. I guess i will hope to get lucky and have this thing run long enough to copy what i need. Thanks for the help.
