Budget video editing machine

Thread Starter
Ok people, my mate asked me to whip together a budget machine for video editing using Adobe premiere pro and aftereffects CS6 . Anywhere between £300-600 ( wide gap I know) which isn’t usually my area of expertise.

This is what I have whipped together for a top end of his budget:

CPU: Amd 8320 £120
Mobo: Gigabyte GA-970A: £52
Ram: 16GB DDR 3 1600mhz : £120
PSU: Corsair CX 500w £45
GPU: Nvidia 650ti/660ti £100 (ebay)
Case: Random £25 jobby
SSD: 120gb £60
HDD: 1tb Storage £50

Total: Roughly £570-80.

Now the issue I am having is trying to find out if OpenCL is supported on windows in adobe Cs6, I cant seem to find a concrete answer. If it was I would probs pop in a 7850 or something.

Also I am struggling to find a cheaper build that I think would fit his criteria. If anyone could help mock up say a £400 build I would very much appreciate it. You could cut the ram to 8GB and the storage to 500gb and the graphics card isn't so important ( he wont be gaming) but I don’t want a massive performance hit due to the downgrade.

Any ideas would be amazing.

Cheers

If I recall correctly there is no OpenCL support in CS6 only CUDA. The upcoming adobe CC suite on the other hand will be running OpenCL only again if memory serves. FYI OpenCL runs on all cards not just AMD in case you didn't know.

So if CS6 is what you will be using I would stick with an Nvidia card. Pro tip though the GTX 500 series cards are much faster at CUDA then the 600 's so if you can get your hands on a cheap 570/580 then that would be better for editing (bust slower for gaming).

Photoshop CS6 supports OpenCL while Premiere CS6 and After Effects CS6 doesnt support OpenCL.
Its possible that future adobe versions may support OpenCL, but it doesnt matter what card you use.
Video editing relies 99% on cpu power

An i7 3770K without a videocard (only use igpu) will beat that rig in video editing.
If your friend doesnt play games, get an i7 for that budget.
If he games a lot, then you'll have to compromise cpu power and get a decent card.
