point me in the right direction, Streaming media server

Thread Starter
I know forums get full of people asking for hand holding and im really not asking for that. But i just need you guys to point me in the right direction because WOW google.com is full of ALOT of different opinions!

The goal
I want to make a server that i can backup a photography collection. I also want to build a box that can stream my video and music collection to me wherever i am ( that has a decent connection)

So far im looking at FreeNAS for the basic file server. but im having trouble figuring out if its going to meet my streaming needs. Are there better choices than FreeNas?

how much raw performance benefit will stuff like Supermicro motherboard and ECC ram offer me, for my intended purpose?

I'm not certain if there are better choices for this than FreeNAS, but FreeNAS should be perfectly sufficient for this. Backups and media streaming to a handful of clients are pretty lightweight uses.

None. Neither motherboard brand nor the use of ECC memory will have much of any impact on performance. It's more of a reliability thing.

You don't need much in the way of CPU or memory performance for a backup and streaming server.

I use W7 with Flexraid so I can use the box as a HTPC also. I stream to two Raspberry Pi's with XBMC on them and two additional PC's for storage backups and such. As far as hardware goes, for a pure storage box, virtually any computer will work and allow you to stream from it. If you do not want to pay for the OS, FreeNAS and SnapRAID are both free. I just like the ease of use of FlexRAID and I am familiar with Windows, so it was just a natural fit for me. UnRAID is also good and some like it's interface also.
