Oh , as for fires breaking out, its bad connections that cause this. it causes heating of the pins/wires till things melt and short, then all hell breaks loose. Thats why fuse protection is important, and also using a correctly sized fuse. The main board will have fuses/trip swtches, they're the second line of defence really. Easy way to check your existing stuff, is check for signs of melting, any heat from the plugs/adapters. Heat is the bad sign. Thats what PAT testing is all about, is inspecting cables/fittings for signs of damage, like cuts, melted parts, correct size fuse fitted for the appliance in question. They also do an insulation test with a special meter which usually whacks about 500V on the cables to check if the insulation breaks down.
