Please Advice!

Hello everyone, I am in need ot some advice.

I am looking to build a server of sorts. my mother has thousands of photos, my wife and mother in law have thousands of photos... and currently its all saved on cheap $70 external harddrives for back up.

Now I cant afford a RAID controller and a full NAS, but I have some pretty solid desktop parts laying around and would like to purchase a few of the 3TB Western digital Reds.

My concern is, will these run off a standard Mobo? I dont know much about NAS drivers vs a regular drive. I would like alot of storage, but would also like a little security. I have also never set up a RAID, but am looking to learn RAID 5. or is RAID 5 overkill for home use and is there another alternative that in case a drive fails I no longer have proof I was ever married or my kids existed...

Next caveat to this, and this is only a side goal, I would like to be able to set this up in such a way that we can sync our phones to it for easy upload.

Thanks for any help and suggestion everyone.

I have kind of the same problem: family members with 10s of gigs of data and no or little in the way of backup.

I've been meaning to jump into/explore bittorrent sync but have not yet (and therefore can't speak to it).

It looks like it would be ideal for the situation though. I mean assuming wife/sister/mother all live in different locations and have enough space to mirror at least one other person's photos (ideally each one would mirror both the others, right?). I liked the idea because it would using bit torrent and therefore not necessarily be using 100% of the bandwidth. Just a dribble. That was my theory.

Thank you subassy, I will look into that bittorrent sync. I think I am going to try and just build a storage server and then use backup software to just take an image of specific folders, like "pictures"

Now I need to figure out what kind of drives to buy. ^^
