Fan controller temperature probes - measure reservoir temps?

Thread Starter
Hi all,

There's something I've been wondering recently...

I've got a BitFenix Recon fan controller installed in my rig at the moment, but for now the temperature sensors aren't doing a whole lot aside from monitoring the ambient temperature inside my case, which as you can imagine, isn't incredibly helpful.

Ideally, I would like those sensors to give me readings of the temperature inside my loop, or more specifically, my reservoir.
Now, call me crazy, but it just doesn't seem like a very good idea to just go ahead and dunk the sensors into my reservoir and call it a day, at least intuitively...

So, my question is, IS it safe to just put the sensors inside the reservoir and call it a day?
If not, are there any other options or workarounds you could suggest?
Open to suggestions, thanks!

The temperature sensors aren't waterproof. Something like this inline Phobya Temp Sensor will work though.

For water temps you can just tape the flat probes to the end or head tank of a radiator.
A lot of the dedicated water sensors are just the flat probes wrapped around a metal fitting and covered with plastic. As a result they are no more or less accurate.

Temps don't change much through the loop but the recon works with all the water sensors available in water cooling stores. Dedicated g1/4 port and inline sensors are good for measuring temps at different points in the loop.
If you want to have more than one channel controlled by water temp the open source Pheobetria software for the Recon allows multiple channels to be controlled by a single sensor.

Edit: I have used the flat sensors in water and it works fine to begin with but slowly the water somehow changes the resistance of the small sensor piece and as a result it starts reading incorrect temps. It does not do any long term damage as far as I could tell, the sensors eventually returned to working normally.
