How to tell if USB ports may be failing

Thread Starter
So earlier I was cleaning out my case, just some general dusting with a soft bristled paintbrush, I then turned my PC back on and when I went to use my keyboard I found it wasnt being picked up.

I tried plugging something else into the port and it didnt work. So I rebooted, and still no luck. I rebooted and unplugged my keyboard from the ports and rebooted, then plugged it back in when it had booted, and it was working fine.

I doubt I damaged it whilst dusting, as the ethernet port next to the two USBs was working fine, so if I'd damaged that it would have all gone kaput.

The only other thing I can think of is I had a USB card reader plugged in, as I was uploading some pictures, between the cleaning and the first failed USB usage. So I thought perhaps it could have been some sort of issue with that.

Otherwise, if it is the USB ports themselves, what do I do? Besides buying a new mobo of course.

Say if you had one good USB port left you could connect a USB hub to it? But it depends, i've never come across a motherboard with stuffed usb ports, it might be possible i guess. Update your chipset and usb drivers if you haven't already.

I have however come across that issue with the keyboard when plugging it into a different port than usual, after moving the desktop away to a different room for cleaning. But powering down and plugging it back in while booting as you mentioned should fix it.

Use USB 2 ports for keyboard and mouse of possible (can't see your rig atm). USB hubs are likely to ruin USB ports. I fixed an issue on a Gigabyte Z77X-UD3H (which has only USB 3 ports in the I/O panel and only 1 was working) by updating the USB 3 drivers. After that all ports are working.
