For that price, why don't you get an SSD and use the 500gb for storage?

The OS drive needs to have full system encryption Which doesn't go to well with and SSD

The highest performance 1TB mechanical HDD is the Western Digital WD1000DHTZ 1TB VelociRaptor. Price is $229 USD from Newegg.

SATA 3 (e.g. 6.0 Gbps SATA) won't matter for any hard drive, not a single one on the market can even provide burst speeds above 3.0 Gbps levels, not even the VelociRaptor. You need to get an SSD if you want the interface speed to really matter.

If you want something a little less exotic, get a WD Blue 1TB single platter drive. It's faster than the 1TB Black edition, and costs less.

For what it's worth, unless you're using a drive with FDE built-in, it won't matter if you go with a SSD or a HDD. Either one will support OS level software encryption, and the SSD has no disadvantages with something like Bitlocker or Linux-based FS encryption.

Read a review that the WD Blue 1TB single platter drives arent so good for an OS drive ?

Not so good, are compared to what? Most recommendations now are for OS to reside on an SSD for performance reasons. There's no downside to using a WD Blue for OS except that it's going to be 1/5th the speed of a top end SSD in the same role.

If you're dead set on a high performance OS HDD and want to avoid SSD, then I'd stick by my VelociRaptor recommendation. I have one in my wife's i7-3820 Windows 8 machine, and it's pretty fast for mechanical storage.

I used a WD Blue for my other pc's boot drive and it's faster than the Barracuda I used to use for boot.
The WD Blue/VelociRaptor is probably the best you'll find.
