Fixing Scrol Wheel problems, can it be done?

I got a SideWinder X8, and i have been having a scroll problem for, probably many years now.

And it´s like this, it works fine, i can scroll up and done. Than at some point, it will start scrolling up and down like mad. And this happens between the scroll.
Meaing If i just stopped scrolling at that point, it will just continue to scroll like mad probably forever, but if i scroll one turn more, up or down, it will stop.

Then all is fine, till it happens again.

It´s not at a certain point in the wheel, it just happens.

And it´s extremely frustrating, in games i have no words, guess how it feels like to shift weapon with a scroll, just to se all weapons getting shiften all over the place;P

And many other points, the only good thing about it, it´s that it´s funny at occasions.

Now i have tried blowing and stuff like that to no avail, and searching doesn´t give me much except, Clean it, which well, i have done as much as i can i think.

So any ideas?

If i recall correctly the model uses a optical sensor for the wheel, so not so easy to replace/fix.

you could try to check if there is a FW update, maybe they reduced the internal polling rate/timings a little to avoid this issue (if you are super lucky, i would be surprised if MS supports their peripherals a lot after release - but maybe just my win 8 hate speaking wink.gif.

I think you are correct about the optical sensor.

From what i can see nothing is found.
I am guessing i should open it and clean it, but sadly i haven´t got those screwdrivers needed, but hopefully it has something to do with dust, as Optical Sensors often are very sensitive for that stuff.
