New Build, Final Lookover

Thread Starter
So recently my sister has asked me to build her a PC to last her for the next half-decade to help her finish her degree. Basic requirements involve a moderate amount of gaming, and some 3D modelling and rendering. know it's a fools errand to try and futureproof a PC but hopefully this should keep her for a good long while:

CPU: Intel Core i5 4670
Mobo: Gigabyte GA-Z87X-D3H Motherboard
Memory: G.Skill Ares F3-1866C9D-8GAB 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3
PSU: Antec High Current Gamer 520W HCG-520
GPU: ASUS Radeon R9 280X DirectCUII V2 TOP 3GB
Case: BitFenix Raider Mid Tower Case Black
SSD: Samsung 840 Pro Series 128GB SSD
HDD: Seagate Barracuda 2TB ST2000DM001
DVD Drive: Samsung 24x DVDRW
OS: Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit

If this doesn't last her 5 years I don't know what will. Any constructive criticism would be appreciated.

Agree. Save your money on a higher priced Mobo designed for OCing if you do not plan on getting an unlocked CPU.

Agreeing with the above, as long as you dont plan on overclocking. But if you are, you should get an aftermarket cooler and an unlocked K processor for sure.

If she does some designing/rendering you could spend some of the money you saved on more RAM (16 gigs). My girlfriend is a designer who keeps open all her applications (women) so I'm glad I got 16 Gb RAM for her tongue.gif But I dont know which programs she'll use and how intensive they are on the different components - look that up smile.gif

If she does 3D modelling, FX series would perform better. In aspects of gaming - Intel would perform better.

I would try to go with a 3770 then if I was you if a 4770 is out of reach price wise (the extra threads will be utilized in modeling programs and should lower render times) and you don't need a Z77 or Z87 motherboard if you are going with a locked processor either so that will save you a good $70 right there (which will basically pay for the i7 practically).

Although, one thing to note an overclocked i7 (even at 4.3-4.5GHz) is relatively easy to achieve and will lower those render times substantially. Won't require crazy cooling, and can be figured out to be stable quite stable pretty quickly (12 hour Prime95 run @ 90% memory utilization).
